Syrah fruit for this wine comes from both the East Side and West Side estate properties. It was fermented with 65% whole cluster in 1.5-ton open-top stainless steel bins, then pressed to barrel and aged for 11 months prior to bottling. This is a far more approachable Syrah than Donna’s Block—juicier and more supple, with blackberry, black cherry, and blueberry fruit leading the way. The tannins are gentler, yet still carry a crisp, crunchy edge, balanced by expressive, juicy acidity with a blood orange character. Aromatically complex, the wine offers layers of perfumed rose petals, clove, and incense, with dried sage and spearmint adding nuance. Super fresh, inviting, and wonderfully complete.

Donna’s Block is located on the east side of the estate, surrounding the winery. Fermented with 100% whole cluster in 1.5-ton open-top stainless steel bins, this wine requires foot-stomping in the early days to break things up enough for punchdowns. “The stems are perfectly ripe,” says assistant winegrower Garrett Adelman. After fermentation, the wine is pressed to all neutral oak and aged for 18 months. Typically picked in November, the grapes never become overripe—pH remains low, preserving freshness and balance. Let me tell you: this is one of the most expressive Syrahs you’ll taste from the Sta. Rita Hills. Just four barrels were produced of this Donnachadh Vineyard Syrah from Alban and Estrella clones, aged 10 months in French oak. The nose is deeply enticing—rich with spicy charcuterie, violets, and black cherry fruit. On the medium-bodied palate, firm, mineral-laced tannins and zesty saline acidity deliver mouthwatering tension. Layers of blackberry coulis, cherry pit, vanilla, and ironstone minerality unfurl across a long, tightly coiled finish. From Grassini Family Vineyards, the ‘SAUVI B’ Sauvignon Blanc playfully bills itself as “Breakfast Wine”—not because it tastes like a breakfast sandwich (it doesn’t), but because its brisk 12.8% alcohol and lip-smacking acidity could rival your morning espresso. While not actually recommended for sipping at sunrise, it’s a perfect companion for oysters, crisp salads, and yes, even a side of fries at lunch. Zesty and lemon-bright, it layers in crushed almond nuances, white peach, and delicate white flowers, all carried through a long, refreshing finish.
From the Portico Hills Vineyard in Los Alamos, this vibrant Pinot Noir from Sunny Doench Stricker is both pretty and purposeful. From Amy Christine MW and Peter Hunken comes this downright thrilling Syrah—an utterly complete wine that captures the soul of the variety. High-toned violet aromatics evoke the spirit of the Northern Rhône, while savory elements of white pepper, black truffle, and charcuterie speak to Syrah’s wilder side. On the palate, it’s driven by zesty, saline-acid tension—imagine a squeeze of blood orange over herb-laced sea salt—balanced by sinewy tannins that bring a muscular architecture to the wine. Agave nectar and dried sage add nuance to the long, spicy finish.Super bright and zesty, complex and layered.

This wine is intensely expressive, with notes of new leather, white pepper, black cherry, and espresso bean. The 38-acre El Jabali Vineyard—pronounced “el hob-a-lee” and Spanish for “Wild Boar”—is divided into five unique blocks, each with varying slopes and aspects shaped by Pacific Ocean breezes. The 2022 release is one of the most approachable Alma Rosa wines in recent vintages, offering heady aromas of perfumed rose petals, coffee bean spice, and cherry cola. Soft, supple, and silky dark berry fruit envelops the medium-bodied palate, packed with rich toasty oak and layers of baking spices that carry through a long, ironstone-mineral finish.

To fully appreciate this wine, you need the backstory, as laid out on the back label: “First there was Nuits Blanches, a blue label Chardonnay born from the frustration Jim Clendenen felt toward the critical response for his Chardonnays. It was bold, brash, obvious, and overwhelming. The 2000 vintage XXth Anniversary Chardonnay marked a style reconciliation. The richness and aggressiveness of the Nuits Blanches style would be tempered with the balance, acidity, and complexity of the Au Bon Climat ‘Bouge’ style. Power and elegance. Big entry and persistent finish. This bottling comes from ABC’s Bien Nacido ‘K’ Block Estate, and the Le Bon Climat Estate Vineyard across from the Santa Maria River. Now [the late] Jim can have his toast, and eat with it, too!” And on that note, this toasty, gorgeously focused Chardonnay opens like a morning walk on the beach, sea spray minerality weaving through the air like the scent of just-baked croissants. Named after the late Jim Clendenen’s daughter, Isabelle, this wine is a blend of the best barrels from Au Bon Climat’s top vineyard sites. It’s a beautifully fragrant Pinot Noir, with bright pine forest aromatics and deep forest berry character layered with nuances of espresso and pomegranate seed. A tapestry of velvety-textured tannins envelops the palate, carrying juicy cherry, blood orange, and fragrant Indian spices through an extended, graceful finish. Sources for the 2022 include: Bien Nacido (Santa Maria Valley AVA), Rancho La Cuna, Los Alamos Vineyard, Kick on Vineyard (Los Alamos Valley – Santa Barbara County), Talley Vineyard (Arroyo Grande AVA), and Lala Panzi Vineyard (Russian River Valley AVA). These small lots are kept separate throughout fermentation and aging and the final blend is a lot selection of the best barrels.

Babcock’s approach here mirrors his method with Pinot Noir: fermentation occurs in small open-top bins with no significant stem inclusion. Ferments are allowed to rise into the upper 80s or low 90s °F, inoculated on day two, and undergo 4–5 punchdowns daily by day four. The wine is pressed off between days 10 and 14 with a touch of residual sugar to complete fermentation in barrel. Malolactic is inoculated, and the wine spends 18 months in barrel, with up to 50% new French oak, depending on the wine’s character.

Regeneratively farmed, aged for 18 months in oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is a generous and deeply appealing Petite Sirah. It opens with saturated notes of black cherry, plum, and blackberry, lifted by floral hints of violet and rose petal. Supple tannins bring a fine-grained texture, coating the palate with cocoa powder and resolving into a finish marked by ripe blue fruit, mineral tension, and spicy, mouthwatering acidity.

This wine sits comfortably in the stylistic pocket of the 2021 vintage but leans more fruit-forward on the palate, with supple, juicy fruit and expressive, robust tannins. Notes of cherry cola shine through, reflecting the warmth of the vintage, balanced by bright sage, spiced plum, and baking spices. The finish is long, and layered with dark cacao and plenty of structure.
