It shows terrific mineral tension and a long finish of lemon oil with hints of local scrub. Sourced from a roughly 35-acre site south of Brownfield, planted entirely to ENTAV clones.

Sourced entirely from Kalasi’s Narra Vineyards estate in the Texas High Plains—located five hours from the winery—refrigerated transport is essential to preserving the quality of the fruit. This light, low-alcohol white is ideal for summer sipping or pairing with spicy, rich dishes. Highly floral and delicate, it features enchanting aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle. On the palate, it delivers impressive phenolic grip and a vinous character, underpinned by a chalky mineral baseline and bright acid tension. Lean, focused, and utterly refreshing, this white shows both charm and precision.

Made from early-picked grapes, with larger berries and lighter skins, this rosé undergoes pressing directly at the vineyard before being transported to the winery. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by six months of aging in tank before bottling. With a modest 12% alcohol and a light orange hue from brief skin contact, this wine is vibrant and refreshing. It offers bright red berry and high-toned melon fruit notes, layered with savory herbal undertones. The palate is defined by a tart, racy acid backbone that leads to a dry, crisp finish. This is one of my favourite rosés from Kerrville Hills, as the Cinsault creates an intriguing and complex pink wine that leaps from the glass with bright cherry fruit, apricot, and tangerine peel. It builds with medium-bodied intensity, showing candied minerality and warming brown spices that emerge on the finish. Simply a super-pleasing rosé.

Alta Loma Vineyard, Picpoul Blanc

Under the guidance of John Rivenburgh at Bending Branch, Picpoul Blanc was first planted in Texas in the High Plains around 2009 at the then-named Bending Branch Estate Vineyard. Selected for its excellent acid retention, the planting drew inspiration from Tablas Creek in Paso Robles. This particular wine comes from the roughly 15-acre Alta Loma Vineyard in the Texas High Plains (previously known as Timmons Estate Vineyard until its recent renaming). After harvest, the grapes are pressed in the vineyard, then transported to the winery and fermented on the skins without cold settling. Known for its natural acidity, the variety requires no acid adjustments and is bottled approximately six months after fermentation. This Picpoul Blanc is super aromatic, offering honeyed and nutty notes, melon-rich fruit, and pretty white floral aromas interwoven throughout. The palate is richly textured with good depth, balanced by a pleasant grip and a long, salty mineral finish.

Sourced entirely from their Michael Ros Vineyards in the Texas High Plains, this wine was aged for 19 months in 12% new Russian oak. Winemaker Tim Drake says he loves Russian oak, which he began using in 2005 while in Washington State. The trees used are over 300 years old, and the grain is so tight you need a magnifying glass to see it—meaning minimal oxygen penetration during aging, yet the wood imparts a touch of baking spice complexity. The wine itself shows a rich, soft fruit profile with ripe red fruit, cherry, and cranberry alongside espresso bean, sage, and green tobacco notes that layer beautifully across the mid-palate. The finish is lengthy, carried by sweet spice and plush tannins in this elegant medium-bodied expression.

From Friesen Vineyard in Brownfield, Texas, in the Texas High Plains—owned by Ron Yates—this wine was fermented in one-ton fermenters and aged in French oak, roughly 40% new, with tight-grain barrels to help manage tannins. The wine is bright and expressive, showing ripe dark berry and blue fruit with violet nuances and warm baking spice tones that build across the medium-bodied palate. Supple, ripe tannins and subtle cocoa powder notes carry through to the lengthy finish. Nicely balanced and well-structured, and if this is the direction Signor is headed under winemaker Michael Barton, it’s definitely one to watch.

Reddy Vineyards, established by a Texas Tech professor, covers over 400 acres and cultivates an impressive 38 different grape varieties. This Viognier, sourced from their site in Brownfield in the Texas High Plains, is fermented in stainless steel and bottled shortly after fermentation in October, maintaining its fresh and vibrant character. Bright, crisp, and refreshingly easy to drink, it reveals intriguing nutty notes that add depth to its profile, with a distinctive hibiscus tea character lingering on the finish. A delightful and approachable expression.

Medium-bodied on the palate, it reveals more spice character and a pleasant loamy earth minerality on the finish. Balanced and polished, with a lush texture. The Il Segno Red blends 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and opens with bright, candied red berry fruit, interlaced with sweet spices, agave nectar, and a touch of orange zest. The finish is dry and marked by a chalky mineral quality, contrasting nicely with its fruit-forward profile. Elisa Christopher Wines is a project between married couple Elisa and Christopher Jones. The couple owns a 43-acre property in the Texas Hill Country AVA. They make wine from 100% Texas-grown grapes and are making some fantastic sparkling wine in addition to their still wine offerings. Visit them at their tasting room just west of Johnson City, Texas.

This is the inaugural release from Spencer Gatlin—son of Dan Gatlin—who has launched his own project with a clear vision. “What he has done, and will do, is create his own concepts,” Dan says proudly. One of those concepts centers on Merlot 181, a clone Spencer calls “a grape that blows my mind.” Inspired by a 2018 trip to France—specifically a day spent tasting in Saint-Émilion—Spencer set out to craft a Right Bank–style wine rooted in Pomerol sensibilities. Sourced from Narra Vineyards in the Texas High Plains, along with a few additional nearby sites, this blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc is grown at about 10 clusters per vine, averaging 1 ton per acre. Fermented in open-top bins with cooling plates and hand punchdowns over 7–10 days, then aged 12 months in 20% new French oak followed by 12 months in neutral barrels. The wine opens with elegant red fruit tones, baking spice, high-toned red florals, and a touch of cedarwood. Medium-bodied on the palate, it offers a plush mix of cranberry and plum with supple tannins and a saline-mineral finish that begs for a well-salted cut of steak.
