Grown by Friesen Vineyards and aged for 15 months in 35% new French oak, this Cabernet Franc comes from Ron Yates Winery, which opened in 2016 following the Yates family’s purchase of Spicewood Vineyards in 2007. With nearly two decades of experience in grape growing and winemaking in the Texas Hill Country, the team delivers a polished expression of the variety. The wine is driven by dark cherry and currant fruit layered with notes of sagebrush and prairie grass. On the palate, it shows a lean, iron-like crushed stone minerality, cedarwood spice, and supple, building tannins that carry through a long, smoky paprika finish.

This bright and zippy Sauvignon Blanc from Del Valley Vineyard, located about 70 miles from El Paso on a site of ancient river rock, is fresh and precise. Bursting with lemon-lime character, it’s laser-focused and lean, with a vibrant thread of limestone minerality running through it. Crisp and inviting, this Sauvignon Blanc is an excellent choice for those who appreciate a clean and mineral-driven white wine.
Super delicate on the nose, with wildflowers and white-peach notes and just a kiss of vanilla. Light- to medium-bodied, with those same lifted aromatics carrying onto the palate, finishing crisp with a faint, chalky minerality. 100% Albariño. Five barrels made, with some new-oak ageing. Sourced from Bingham Vineyards — who also grow organic peanuts and cotton.
From Friesen Vineyard in Brownfield, Texas, in the Texas High Plains—owned by Ron Yates—this wine was fermented in one-ton fermenters and aged in French oak, roughly 40% new, with tight-grain barrels to help manage tannins. The wine is bright and expressive, showing ripe dark berry and blue fruit with violet nuances and warm baking spice tones that build across the medium-bodied palate. Supple, ripe tannins and subtle cocoa powder notes carry through to the lengthy finish. Nicely balanced and well-structured, and if this is the direction Signor is headed under winemaker Michael Barton, it’s definitely one to watch.

Fermented in stainless steel and aged sur lie for about 6 months in concrete, this wine is sourced from Alta Loma Vineyards in the Texas High Plains near Brownfield, Texas. It’s fragrant and aromatic, showing rich baking spice character and dried floral notes with super-grippy acid tension and a candied mineral component. Subtle citrus fruit carries through on the medium-length finish.
Fermented in stainless steel, with ageing split between partial acacia wood puncheons—used to build mid-palate weight and aromatic intensity—and stainless steel for five months. Very bright, crisp, energetic, and clean, with citrus notes alongside subtle hints of papaya and mango, flinty minerality, and white flowers on the nose. Medium-bodied on the palate, with excellent tension and grip, leading to a clean, mineral-driven finish with a saline edge. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc, harvested at 23.5 Brix and aged for five months in stainless steel, is a vibrant white. It opens with high-toned herbaceous and spice notes, leading to flavors of creamy melon, lime, and a zesty lime finish.
The Tatum Cellars “Trois Etoiles” white blend is composed of 63% Marsanne, 21% Viognier, and 16% Roussanne, with only 100 cases produced. It opens with high-toned spice notes reminiscent of Texas prairie grass and hay, seamlessly interwoven with bright citrus fruit aromas. Light- to medium-bodied, the wine is clean and approachable, offering a straightforward yet enjoyable profile. The finish lingers with a subtle touch of crushed Marcona almonds, adding a pleasing complexity to this small-production white.
This 100% Roussanne is sourced entirely from Reddy Vineyards in the Texas High Plains. Fermented in stainless steel and bottled in November shortly after harvest, it offers a fresh yet generously textured profile. This white presents good body and plumpness, showcasing salty citrus flavors alongside subtle nutty notes on the finish and very good balance of richness and freshness.
Reddy Vineyards, established by a Texas Tech professor, covers over 400 acres and cultivates an impressive 38 different grape varieties. This Viognier, sourced from their site in Brownfield in the Texas High Plains, is fermented in stainless steel and bottled shortly after fermentation in October, maintaining its fresh and vibrant character. Bright, crisp, and refreshingly easy to drink, it reveals intriguing nutty notes that add depth to its profile, with a distinctive hibiscus tea character lingering on the finish. A delightful and approachable expression.
The 2023 Petite Sirah is a powerhouse—bold, rich, and full-bodied with robust, driving tannins. It’s thoroughly hedonistic, bursting with decadent blackberry, spiced plum, fig jam, and blue fruit layered with vivid dark chocolate notes. Blood orange acidity brightens the lengthy, baking-spice-driven finish. Grown in sandy loam soils, the wine was fermented in large oak fermenters and aged for 16 months in 30% new French oak barrels. Uplift farms 55 acres within the Hoover’s Valley, which runs through the Llano Uplift, one of the more impressive repositories of rare earth minerals found in the USA. The Badu, only made in the best vintages, is a blend of 41% Sangiovese, 43% Aglianico, 11% Montepulciano, and 5% Merlot, offering a super attractive red-fruited profile with beautiful black tea nuances and fragrant cedarwood spice. Medium-bodied, it presents apple skin tannins, white pepper notes, and crunchy red fruit, all scented with fresh rose petals and violets that carry through the wine from start to finish. I first tasted this wine in November of 2024, and since then, it’s put on some real weight, depth of fruit flavor, and the finish is long with saline-minerality that is incredibly inviting. Winemaker Claire Richardson, along with her full-time vineyard crew, is doing a phenomenal job crafting bright, fresh, and energetic wines that truly capture the essence of this slice of Texan countryside. A year ago, I wrote that this 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon shows the most promise among all of the barrel samples I tasted in Texas in November 2024. Tasting it again in October of 2025, this wine is just as impressive, gaining fruit depth and density, boasting a kind of Left Bank purity in the fruit profile, showcasing vibrant red and black fruit, spices, and mineral nuances, along with notes of thyme, sage, and anise with wet slate minerality on the lengthy finish. The transformation is evident, and this wine is a testament to that evolution, promising an exciting future for these wines.

The Whitlock is a blend of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 20% Malbec, and 20% Petite Sirah. Aged 16 months in 20% new French oak. This blend of 68% Marsanne and 32% Roussanne, crafted by Claire Richardson with consulting winemaker Jean Hoefliger, is a bright, fresh, and expressive white sourced from Uplift Vineyard in the Texas Hill Country. Wedding Oak Winery’s Texas High Plains Castanet Rosé offers a fantastic medium-bodied palate with a velvety-silky texture. A subtle hint of sweetness is balanced by a firm spine of grippy acidity, creating a harmonious and inviting profile. The William Chris Vineyards 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from vineyards in the Texas High Plains, is quite exceptional. This medium-bodied red shows remarkable balance and seamlessness, even by this producer’s high standards. Blackberry fruit, currants, cassis, and dried cherry mingle with hints of tobacco and a tapestry of mild Indian spices, all supported by a firm bed of fine, mineral-driven tannins. The medium-length finish is fruit-forward with subtle earthy notes adding complexity. Aged for 20 months in 20% new French oak and 80% neutral oak barrels. From Dell Valley Vineyard, a site situated 3,500 feet above sea level on an ancient coral reef that imparts a salty minerality to the wine. It offers dark berry fruit, tobacco spice, and bright wild herb character—balanced and fragrant with cassis and blackberry fruit on the medium-bodied palate. The finish is lengthy and expressive, framed by perfectly crisp, firm tannins with a velvety texture. A benchmark wine for the region from Tony Offhill with Jean Hoefliger as consultant.

From Dell Valley Vineyard, at 3,500 feet above sea level, this site sits on an ancient coral reef that imparts a distinct salty minerality to the wine. Dark berry fruit, tobacco spice, and bright wild herbs lead the aromatics, while the medium-bodied palate shows cassis and blackberry fruit with balanced fragrance and lift. The finish is lengthy and expressive, framed by crisp, firm tannins that carry a velvety texture. A model wine for the region from Tony Offill. For the last couple of years, Jean Hoefliger of JH Consulting has worked with the team as well.

The 2023 Petit Verdot from Dell Valley Vineyard in Hudspeth County is a dark-fruited, medium-bodied red offering notes of dark cherry, fig, and blackberry jam, accented by toasty oak nuances and dark chocolate. It’s framed by crisp, apple-skin tannins with a spine of zesty acidity that brightens the finish. Aged for 16 months in 50% new French oak and 50% neutral oak barrels. Continuously planted since 1987, the vines at Dell Valley are planted in sloped sandy caliche soils, at more than 3,500 feet elevation. William Chris Vineyards was founded in 2008 by William “Bill” Blackmon and Chris Brundrett. Tony Offill leads the cellar as Head Winemaker, and Jean Hoefliger is the consulting winemaker.

From the Hye Estate, this Tannat is ripe and fragrant, with a beautiful mix of red and purple florals, sweet spices, and extremely polished, firm, fine-grained tannins. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, it showcases brown spices and elegant cedarwood throughout, all while maintaining incredible freshness. Terrific fruit purity and density of fruit weight on the mid-palate are off the charts. Winemaker Tony Offill, who started here in 2017, has made marked improvements, and with Napa-based consultant Jean Hoefliger, who began consulting with William Chris in 2022, the transformation of these wines is incredible, and they are among the best wines being made in Texas today. 

The Syrah includes 7% Grenache, sourced from the Vintage Press Vineyard in Stonewall, Texas. Aromas of white pepper, tart red berry fruit, violets, and wild herbs lead into a medium-bodied palate. Expressive wild herb character and blood orange acidity build across the palate, carrying through to a firm, tannic finish.

The Cabernet is sourced from the winery’s 24-hectare estate and includes a portion of Petite Sirah, aged for 24 months in 30% new French oak. It shows classic Cabernet character with notes of blackberry, smoky graphite, and smoked paprika, all coming together on a plush, full-bodied palate. There’s an umami richness that drives the finish, with layers of dark fruit, cherry cola, and savory depth building through to the end. Quite the wine.

nuances, pressed wildflowers, and expressive, well-integrated toasty oak. Full-bodied, with firm, taut, mineral-laced tannins and excellent grippy saline-acid tension underscoring the rich dark fruit and spice character. This is a very well-made wine, showing excellent density and impressive complexity from nose to finish.

A blend of Barbera from the Texas High Plains, Teroldego, and Sangiovese—the predominant variety. Fermented in stainless steel with two to three days of pumpovers, then aged for up to 18 months in a mix of new and neutral French oak. Bright, tart red fruits lead the way, with cherry shining through alongside warm brown baking spices. The tannins are firm and textured, yet carry a velvety edge, giving way to a lengthy finish laced with graphite and limestone notes.

Considered a flagship wine of Augusta Vin, this Petite Sirah offers dark berry and brambly fruit layered with tobacco spices and graphite. Bold and powerful tannins resolve beautifully into rich dark berry fruit, finishing with lingering notes of loamy earth and tobacco. This is one of the most balanced and expressive 100% Petite Sirah wines I have tasted. Excellent on its own at cellar temperature, but equally compelling alongside a full meal.

A combination of Petit Verdot from Washington State’s Columbia Valley and California’s Lodi and Paso Robles regions. Lush dark berry fruit leads, lifted by blood orange acid tension and firm, grippy tannins. Dark berry fruit emerges again on the palate, carried by a lengthy mineral-driven finish.

Made in the Charmat method, with grapes picked around 19 brix. The base wine spent 24 months on the lees in neutral French oak barrels before being racked to tank for secondary fermentation with yeast. Dosage is 12g/L. Bright red berry fruit leads the nose, joined by tart cherry, ripe strawberry, and white flowers, with a delicate hint of honeysuckle. The mousse is rich, creamy, and assertive, yet resolves into a mellow, supple palate expression, with good fruit density carrying through to the finish. Despite the higher dosage, the wine remains beautifully balanced. Crafted by Zachary Raines, head winemaker, along with Josiah Phinney, associate winemaker, Cam McDonald, cellar master, and Frankie Aguilar, cellar technician.

Composed mostly of Counoise with a splash of Gewürztraminer, which lifts the aromatics with high-toned white flowers and a hint of guava that also brightens the palate. The mousse is creamy and vibrant, building energy through a lengthy, mineral-rich finish. Nicely balanced, with plenty of acid tension that carries the dosage seamlessly.
This non-vintage dessert wine is blended in a solera style, with fortification occurring in tank midway through fermentation. Fortified with brandy distilled from wine, it’s a truly delicious and well-balanced example of the style. Aromas of candied cinnamon and red berry fruit lead to a palate brimming with luscious dark fig jam, licorice, and a touch of green olive, all accented by savoury Christmas spice. Despite its richness, the wine maintains a lifted freshness and finishes with crisp tension. A dessert wine you can confidently cellar, as it will develop added volume, intensity, and nutty complexity over time.

The 2022 Ranger Hays is a blend of 74% Malbec, 14% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from vineyards across the Texas High Plains and Texas Hill Country. Aged for 24 months in 25% new French and American oak, it’s a savory, medium-bodied red showing notes of dark olive, loamy earth, iron, and crushed rock. Velvety tannins carry through to a starker, mineral-driven finish.

Sourced from the Six Harts Vineyard, owned by Jeter Wilmeth near Tokio and Brownfield in the Texas High Plains, this Reserve Viognier represents a barrel selection of exceptional craftsmanship. The wine bursts with aromas of stone fruit, apricots, and delicate white flowers, all beautifully highlighted by notes of honeysuckle.On the palate, it offers a granular texture, enhanced by a distinctive thread of salty minerality and a chalky character that extends seamlessly through the long, elegant finish. Aged for 16 months in mostly neutral French oak, this Viognier achieves a perfect balance of complexity and approachability. Crafted with precision by Jon Leahy, it is both refined and utterly delicious.
The Merlot from the 7-acre Blackmon Ranch Vineyard in the Texas Hill Country AVA is cold-soaked in foudres, then fermented, with winemaker Tony Offill using only the free-run juice, aged for 16 months in 20% new French oak. Aromas of incense and spiced plum lead into a palate of supple, juicy dark berry fruit framed by velvet-textured, firm tannins. There’s excellent mid-palate depth and plenty of tension to carry the day. These are among the most food-friendly wines I have tasted from Texas, all underpinned by vibrant, mouthwatering acidity.

This 2022 Viognier from Newburg Vineyard in Comanche County is sourced from a west-facing slope on sandy loam soils with excellent drainage, contributing to the wine’s great concentration. Aromas of candied lemon peel and lemon oil burst from the glass, tinged with a drizzle of honey, creating an inviting and aromatic profile. Medium-bodied, it displays nice mid-palate tension, with a long finish marked by the subtle richness of crushed, salted Marcona almonds.
This intriguing sparkling wine, crafted from Trebbiano, offers a bright, rich, and creamy mousse that immediately captivates. Nutty undertones and notes of baking spices are complemented by a hint of honey and pressed wildflowers, adding depth and elegance. A firm backbone of juicy acidity braces the palate, making this sparkling wine refreshingly vibrant and incredibly easy to enjoy. Effortlessly crushable and full of character.
This 2022 Mourvèdre was sourced from the Buena Suerte Vineyards in the Texas HIgh Plains. Sniffing this welcoming red evokes a basket of ripe, farmer’s market strawberries dropped on top of rich panna cotta cream. On the palate, the wine becomse more focused, and layered with firm, taut tannins and an iron-like minerality that fuels its bone-dry finish.

The Il Segno Red blends 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and opens with bright, candied red berry fruit, interlaced with sweet spices, agave nectar, and a touch of orange zest. Medium-bodied, the wine carries these same elements onto the palate, framed by firm tannins that add structure. The finish is dry and marked by a chalky mineral quality, contrasting nicely with its fruit-forward profile. Elisa Christopher Wines is a project between married couple Elisa and Christopher Jones. The couple owns a 43-acre property in the Texas Hill Country AVA. They make wine from 100% Texas-grown grapes and are making some fantastic sparkling wine in addition to their still wine offerings. Visit them at their tasting room just west of Johnson City, Texas.

Elisa Christopher Wines’ Letkeman Family Vineyard Sangiovese from the Texas High Plains opens with distinctive aromas of green tobacco, cedarwood, and spices. Medium-bodied, it features mineral-laced tannins that are intensely grippy, providing a solid structure. The wine finishes with a bright, herbaceous character.
