Flat Creek Estate’s “Super Texan” is a fragrant, meaty red wine with a red-toned character. It offers a medium- to full-bodied palate, enriched with savory notes of truffle, underbrush, and green tobacco, finishing with a long, persistent limestone mineral thread.

The Becker Vineyards 2020 Texas Hill Country Malbec Reserve, sourced from Tallent Vineyard, opens with a hint of funkiness, adding a touch of earthy underbrush and charcuterie, complemented by stewed plum character. Medium-bodied, the wine features grippy tannins that build throughout the palate, culminating in a drying finish. Pair this bold and flavorful Malbec with a nicely salted Ribeye, and you’ll be off to the races.

A combination of fruit from California, Washington, and Texas. Grapes are fermented in stainless steel and aged for 18 to 30 months, depending on the lot, in a mix of new and neutral oak. A blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. This is an easy-going red, with brambly red berry character, smooth tannins, and a lengthy, approachable finish. A very harmonious and well-crafted red blend.

nuances, pressed wildflowers, and expressive, well-integrated toasty oak. Full-bodied, with firm, taut, mineral-laced tannins and excellent grippy saline-acid tension underscoring the rich dark fruit and spice character. This is a very well-made wine, showing excellent density and impressive complexity from nose to finish.

The Wallace Ranch Zinfandel is a heritage selection planted on Yolo sandy loam soils and aged 16 months in a mix of French, Hungarian, and American oak. It presents a darker, more brooding profile than the Historic Blocks bottling, with aromas of espresso bean, dark chocolate, spiced plum, and fig. Full-bodied and richly layered, it shows powerful yet polished tannins that support the plump, juicy fruit. The finish is long, smooth, and enticing. Established in 1972, Dry Creek Vineyard is led by second-generation owner & President Kim Stare Wallace and oversees 185 acres of sustainably farmed vineyards.

This wine received longer aging than is typical for the winery—31 months in 57% new French oak and 43% neutral oak. It opens with alluring notes of sagebrush, thyme, and rosemary layered over dark loamy earth, violets, and charcuterie. Currant fruit and dark chocolate–covered cherries add richness to the medium-bodied palate, which finishes with a lingering, earthy depth. The Jones family purchased Torre di Pietra Winery in 2018 and invested in 1851 Vineyards the following year, rebranding the operation as Slate Mill Wine Collective and expanding into a custom crush facility. The first official release under the Slate Theory label was a 2017 Malbec, and the Slate Theory winery and cave opened in 2021.

Fermented in open-top bins and aged for 17 months in 25% new French oak, this Zinfandel is big, bold, and Zin-tastic. Bursting with fragrant strawberry-rhubarb fruit and dark chocolate notes, it’s incredibly juicy on the palate, with rich layers of plum and boysenberry. Glorious accents of Indian baking spices, espresso, and dark cacao nibs weave through the finish.

This wine stands out for its elegance and plush texture—one of the softer, more inviting offerings among the four Ridge wines I tasted on a cool Sonoma day in October 2025. Aromatically fine-tuned to red berry fruit and delicate cedarwood spice, it reveals subtle undercurrents of vanilla and shaved coconut. The palate is supple and blue-fruited, juicy and irresistible, with nuances of citrusy acidity, orange peel, and crushed cacao nib intensity carrying through the full-bodied finish. Sourced from a 19th-century Zinfandel vineyard planted in alluvial loam and clay soils at 500 feet of elevation, the centerpiece of the St. Peter’s Church Vineyard still holds original Zinfandel vines planted in the 1880s—believed to be the oldest Zinfandel vines associated with a church in the United States. Fruit from this vineyard was once used by Kent Rosenblum—founder of Rosenblum Cellars and father of current Ridge winemaker Shauna Rosenblum. The vineyard’s namesake clone of Zinfandel later became the foundational planting for nearly all vines in the mountainous 160-acre Rockpile AVA. Ridge has been a Sonoma institution since 1962, known for its single-vineyard winemaking. COO & Head Winemaker John Olney is accompanied in the cellar by Shauna Rosenblum (formerly of Rock Wall Wine Company), focusing on Lytton Springs.
