The 2023 Cabernet Franc is sourced from vineyards on both the east and west sides of Seneca Lake. Each lot was vinified separately in one-ton bins, with 20% saignée prior to fermentation, 10% whole cluster inclusion, and native yeast fermentations. Aged for 12 months in neutral French oak, this red was bottled unfined and unfiltered. True to the region’s style, a savory through line connects the crunchy red berry fruit from nose to finish. Cherry, pomegranate, and raspberry notes mingle with cedarwood spice, while soaring tannins frame the medium-bodied palate. The finish carries rose stem and earthy nuances. One of the cleanest and most structured Cabernet Francs I tasted from the vintage.

Damiani’s 2023 Cabernet Franc Reserve takes everything great about their standard Cabernet Franc and elevates it—more polish, more juiciness, and a silkier expression across the palate. Sourced from a mix of three estate sites and two grower vineyards on both the east and west sides of Seneca Lake, the fruit was fermented in 1-ton bins with 20% saignée and 15% whole cluster inclusion, all with native yeast. Aged 16 months in neutral French oak, the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bright red berry fruit and fine brown baking spices lead the aromatic charge, while cherry-skin tannins glide across the palate with a juicy, plump texture. The finish lingers with blood orange zest, rose oil, coriander seed, and finely etched cedar spice.

If you find yourself gathered around a fire pit after hours, this Firepit Society Cabernet Franc is the bolder, richer, riper expression of “firepit” wine from the Darcie Kent team that you’ll want in your glass. They also make Firepit Red, which is more medium-bodied and agile, but this version is built for those deeper, more contemplative conversations. It’s confident in its seductive dark berry fruit, heady cocoa powder notes, dried rose petal florals, and fuller-bodied presence, with fantastic wild herb character supported by supple tannins. Juicy, long, and lingering, this is a crushable, easily enjoyed wine—with or without a firepit. Aged seven months in French oak and 100% estate-grown in Lemmons Vineyard.

This 100% stainless steel–fermented and –aged Cabernet Franc comes from the Lemmons Vineyard and represents a fresh, innovative approach. “We wanted to show that you can make a Cabernet Franc that comes to market within a year,” says Amanda Kent, co-owner of the winery. “That’s important—to convince growers and producers to plant more and make more Cabernet Franc.” Winemaker Julian Halasz bottled the wine in April following harvest, employing micro-oxygenation and the use of oak staves to enhance texture and balance. The result is a remarkably polished wine with grippy tannins, pure dark berry fruit, blue fruit accents, floral notes, and a hint of bay laurel. Designed for early release and wide accessibility—including supermarket shelves—this is a compelling example of how Livermore producers can offer youthful, cash-flow-friendly Cabernet Franc without sacrificing quality, while still reserving their estate bottlings for long-term aging.

100% destemmed with a 14-day maceration and full malolactic conversion, this Cabernet Franc was aged for seven months in concrete eggs. Easily one of the most refined and polished examples I’ve tasted from New York State, it’s gorgeously perfumed with ripe cherry, black raspberry, and floral top notes. Chalky mineral tones add dimension, while the full-bodied palate dazzles with tension, clarity, and length. Clean, expressive, and varietally true, it balances brightness and elegance in riveting fashion. The lees contact from the egg aging brings subtle texture without weight—this is a stunner.

Sourced from a property acquired in 2009, this Cabernet Franc was fermented with 25% whole clusters using native yeasts, with a 21-day maceration. Twenty percent of the lot underwent carbonic maceration in a separate tank before pressing and blending. Aged six months in stainless steel, the wine is spicy, grippy, and tightly wound, with a perfumed mid-palate of red cherry and rose petal. It finishes with savoury wild herb notes and impressive length.

This medium-bodied Cabernet Franc is a juicy, red-fruited wine driven by saline-laced acidity and supported by intense, grippy apple-skin tannins. There’s a dark muscularity here—deep tones layered with cured meat richness and a savory black olive edge, alongside dried rose petals and wild herbs. Sourced from Sawmill Creek Vineyard, a hillside site on the east side of Seneca Lake with slopes as steep as 20% and elevations ranging from 490 to 820 feet above sea level, and planted in the 1990s to Clone 214 (a Loire Valley selection). Just 250 cases were produced.

The 2023 screwcap Cabernet Franc from Cresta Blanca Vineyard is a dynamic, complex, and expressive wine—especially impressive at a $35 SRP. Aged in concrete and neutral puncheons, this 1,000-case bottling is medium- to full-bodied, striking a remarkable balance between seriousness and approachability. The tannins are superfine and perfectly integrated, framing a beautiful panoply of dried sage, spearmint, and tobacco leaf. Juicy red and black currant fruit anchors the core, with spectacular wet river stone minerality, subtle underbrush, and crushed cacao nib nuances rounding out the finish.

This wine is particularly compelling for its vibrant red fruit profile, layered with gorgeous underbrush and black tea–like tannins. Sourced primarily from Bates Ranch—west of Morgan Hill in the southeastern corner of the Livermore Valley AVA, with vines planted in 1970—and augmented by fruit from Zayante Vineyard, it’s a striking expression of site. The tannins soar, lifted by perfumed floral notes, while bright currant leaf drives the wine from nose to finish. A brooding, high-acid Cabernet Franc that will benefit from time in the cellar—but if you can’t wait, serve it with well-salted steak, burgers, or even richly flavored chicken or fish dishes.

Elements is a one-third blend of the Steven Kent “Steel”, “Rock”, and “Wood” aged Cabernet Franc wines. It’s an effortlessly delicious and expressive wine, capturing the best traits of all three: pure red and black fruit, integrated wild herb nuances, and a lovely thread of saline-mineral tension. Fine-grained tannins have a velveteen edge, gliding into a long finish marked by cocoa nib. Medium-bodied, with slightly less mid-palate depth than Wood, but with greater aromatic lift and flavor complexity. Very well put together—and a pleasure to drink.

Rock is aged in concrete for 14–18 months, offering a strikingly different expression of Cabernet Franc. The red and black currant fruit is more coiled and restrained, layered with earthy nuances and a subtle sauvage character that feels wild yet refined. The texture is almost velvety, with a grounded, mineral presence that gives the wine a quiet power. Really fascinating—and a compelling contrast within this producer’s Cabernet Franc series.

“Steel” is one of four Cabernet Franc wines in a series presented by Steven Kent Mirassou, alongside “Rock”, “Wood”, and “Elements”. Each is aged for just 10 months in a single type of vessel—highlighting how aging environment alone can shape the varietal expression. “The impetus for my wife, Beth, and me was something we experienced in the Loire Valley a year ago,” says Mirassou. “We noticed the variety of aging vessels being used, and after working with Cabernet Franc here for more than 20 vintages—this being my 30th harvest—we wanted to showcase the differences in varietal characteristics across vessels.” Steel is made in a reductive style and is incredibly expressive. Aged for up to 10 months in stainless steel, it reveals striking purity of blackberry, black cherry, and black currant fruit, accented by tobacco leaf, spearmint, and sage. Medium-bodied, with silky fruit and precise saline-acid tension, it finishes with a delicate layer of dried flowers. Fresh, pure, and savory, Steel delivers elegant structure and a perfectly balanced finish.

“Wood” was aged in two nearly neutral barrels—a 2011 barrique and a 2015 barrel—making this one of the most subtle oak treatments in the series. “For us, barrel is about sanding off the corners of acid-driven young wines,” says Steven Kent Mirassou. “We don’t want it to add flavor or aroma. Since we mostly use puncheons, we get fewer wood notes but more structure. That oxygen exchange polishes the wine.” And polished it is. “Wood” pulls together the sauvage character and fresh fruit tones—red and black currant—into a seamless whole. The wine feels composed, with a refined sheen and balanced structure. There’s a quiet density at the mid-palate and a revealing thread of acid tension that makes it deeply food-friendly.

Meaty and savoury, this wine pulses with black olive and black liquorice notes, layered with the umami depth of cured Bresaola and lifted by dried rose petals on both the nose and palate. There’s a zing of blood orange acidity and a zesty, grippy tension that propels the fruit-driven finish. The blend is 75% fruit from Serenity Vineyards (under 10-day carbonic maceration) on the west side of Seneca Lake, farmed by the Hermann J. Wiemer team. The remaining 25% hails from New Suns, the home vineyard on the west side of Cayuga Lake, and was fully destemmed with a two-week maceration. Aged in neutral barrels for 10 months before blending and bottling in August 2024. Hand-harvested and spontaneously fermented.

From Dell Valley Vineyard, a site situated 3,500 feet above sea level on an ancient coral reef that imparts a salty minerality to the wine. It offers dark berry fruit, tobacco spice, and bright wild herb character—balanced and fragrant with cassis and blackberry fruit on the medium-bodied palate. The finish is lengthy and expressive, framed by perfectly crisp, firm tannins with a velvety texture. A benchmark wine for the region from Tony Offhill with Jean Hoefliger as consultant.

From Dell Valley Vineyard, at 3,500 feet above sea level, this site sits on an ancient coral reef that imparts a distinct salty minerality to the wine. Dark berry fruit, tobacco spice, and bright wild herbs lead the aromatics, while the medium-bodied palate shows cassis and blackberry fruit with balanced fragrance and lift. The finish is lengthy and expressive, framed by crisp, firm tannins that carry a velvety texture. A model wine for the region from Tony Offill. For the last couple of years, Jean Hoefliger of JH Consulting has worked with the team as well.

The Wood Family Vineyards 2023 Cabernet Franc was aged for 18 months in 28% new French oak barrels. A touch more refined than the 2022 vintage, it shows focused purity of black currant and black cherry fruit, with fine tobacco nuances and elegant cedarwood accents, complemented by rose petal aromatics. The tannins are soft, velvety, and supple, framing a juicy core with seductive black currant jelly, cigar box notes, white pepper, a hint of cardamom, and a touch of crushed clove. A truly marvelous Cabernet Franc from the Livermore Valley.

The 2024 Cabernet Franc was fermented in a mix of stainless steel and open-top fermenters, then aged in neutral barrique before finishing its maturation in a large 900-gallon oak cask for approximately 30 months. From a warm vintage, the wine shows deep mulberry and dark cherry fruit, laced with delicate rose petal and violet florals. Fine, velvety tannins frame the palate, leading to a long, spice-laden finish.

A delightfully vibrant wine bursting with marmalade, apricot, poached pear, and kiwi notes. The mid-palate is rich and velvety, leading to a long, fruit-driven finish layered with warm allspice character.
This is a bit of a chameleon—beginning with ripe red and black-toned fruit, elegant cedarwood spice, and rose petal nuances. The medium-bodied palate quickly shifts toward the savory spectrum, revealing layers of strawberry-rhubarb, baked cherry, leather, tobacco, and crunchy wild herbs. The finish is bright and lifted by crunchy acidity. Sourced from estate-certified sustainable vineyards and aged in neutral oak for 12 months.

Really nice florals are presented in this single-vineyard rosé, topped with vibrant red berry touches. The palate shows great lift, with a long, spicy, and herbal finish. – J.R.
Destemmed and gently pressed, this Cabernet Franc underwent a slow, low-temperature fermentation throughout harvest before being racked and bottled on December 11, 2024, to complete fermentation in bottle. Left undisgorged, it shows off a fantastically creamy, frothy mousse that lifts ripe melon fruit and drives the wine’s energetic profile. Don’t ask how they pulled it off—but this is easily one of the cleanest, most expressive pét-nats I’ve tasted from New York State.
Harvested from Clone 5 Cabernet Franc at Cresta Blanca Vineyard on the west side of the Livermore Valley AVA, this 2024 release saw just under 400 cases produced. My first taste of Cabernet Franc Blanc came from Steven Kent Winery—either the 2022 or 2023 vintage—and this 2024 bottling hits all the same high notes, while adding new depth. It’s a dynamic expression of a red grape reimagined as a white wine, and it delivers. You might be surprised when you see the label, but give this wine a chance—and here’s what happens: subtle stone and tropical fruit notes build across the medium-bodied palate, nuanced by white flowers. There’s grippy, citrusy acid tension and mineral drive, all layered with apricot pit, white peach, and sea salt. The 2024 version leans a touch more plush and soft than previous vintages, but it remains just as compelling. Stockpile this by the caseload—this is one to watch.

From Seneca Lake’s first winery, this 2022 Cabernet Franc offers ripe cherry fruit laced with cedarwood and vanilla accents builds intrigue, while savory notes of tobacco and earth are framed by robust, mineral-laced tannins. Pomegranate seed-like acidity adds a crunchy, juicy brightness that carries through the tangy, refreshing finish.

This is a super savory and focused red, offering notes of black olive tapenade, black truffle charcuterie, and a hint of red licorice. Wet river stone minerality and blood orange acidity add lift, all supported by crisp, focused tannins. Medium- to full-bodied, with building intensity that carries through to a satisfying finish.

100% Cabernet Franc, destemmed with a 15-day maceration on the skins, then aged 15 months in neutral French oak. This is a powerful, black-fruited expression layered with red berry brightness, black olive, and a dusting of cocoa powder. Firm, taut, mineral-laced tannins provide structure, while the finish lingers with wild herbs and dusty, grippy nuances that underscore the wine’s depth and seriousness.

This 100% Cabernet Franc, aged for 18 months in French oak, comes from Clone 11 (French 214) grown at Lucky 8 Vineyard in the southeastern portion of the Livermore Valley. The wine explodes from the glass with bold oak overtones framing blackberry and spiced plum fruit. It’s a meaty, heady wine layered with loamy earth, pressed violets, soft, supple tannins, and loads of juicy character. This is your burger Cabernet Franc—some for the meat on the grill, the rest for the glass.

A blend of fruit from Long Island and the Hudson Valley, aged in 10% new French oak (confirm via tech sheet). This is a well-knit, expressive Cabernet Franc showing both red and black fruit, with cedarwood and graham cracker spice layered over sagebrush and tobacco leaf aromatics. The medium-bodied palate carries those same notes forward, supported by fine-grained, cohesive tannins and finishing with a lift of cocoa powder, blood orange, and raspberry fruit.

A very elegant Cabernet Franc with a muscular framework of robust, velvety tannins. Bright, pure red berry fruit leads the way, with crunchy cherry and apple-like nuance. Hints of dark salted chocolate thread from the nose through to the tannins, carrying into a mouthwatering, acid-driven finish.

The aromatics lead with red berry fruit and capsicum notes, while the medium-bodied palate shows firm, mineral-laced tannins and more tart berry fruit. It’s an ideal wine to serve alongside spicy Mexican cuisine or peppery brisket.

From Lahey Vineyard in the Texas High Plains, this is 100% Cabernet Franc aged in 30% new French oak. Just 250 cases made. Candied red-berry fruit and brown baking-spice notes lead, joined by hints of coriander and cumin that build across the medium-bodied palate. Smoky clove and a streak of blood-orange acidity (with just a touch of grapefruit pith) add lift and detail. Taut, firm tannins resolve nicely on the finish.

Sourced from Ghielmetti Vineyard, this Cabernet Franc was fermented in multiple open-topped 1.75-ton bins, punched down for extraction, and aged in neutral French oak puncheons. It’s just about everything you want from a New World Cabernet Franc—and distinctly different from anything you’ll find in Napa or elsewhere in California. Steven Kent Winery nails the balance: beautifully ripe and pure currant and plum fruit, accented—never overwhelmed—by sage, mint, and eucalyptus, all woven around tobacco leaf notes. The medium-bodied palate builds with intensity, framed by refined tannins that are firm yet inviting, with a suppleness in the 2022 vintage that’s hard to beat. Round and gentle, it glides into a long, nuanced finish layered with black sea salt, crushed sage, and bright thyme. You won’t want to put this down—and honestly, you’d better pair it with herb-dusted pork loin (or be damned).

This is a barrel selection of the 2022 Cabernet Franc, sourced entirely from Ghielmetti Vineyard. Compared to the larger production bottling, it offers more heft and structure, with firmer tannins and a deeper mid-palate. Notes of dried herbs, a pop of fennel, and the earthy scent of a redwood forest after rain give the wine a savory, umami-rich character. Red and black fruit carry through the finish, layered with black truffle and graphite minerality. Spectacularly balanced, complex, and remarkably approachable—even now—yet built with the bones to age gracefully for two decades or more.

100% Cabernet Franc from the winery’s home vineyard on the west side of Cayuga Lake, currently in conversion to biodynamics. Hand-harvested, fully de-stemmed, with a spontaneous fermentation and three-week maceration. Aged in neutral barrels for 10 months and bottled in August 2023, unfined and unfiltered. This wine delivers terrific dark berry fruit concentration—think mulberry and cherry compote—layered with fine cedarwood, star anise, and violet aromatics. Earthy undertones emerge as the wine builds, anchored by soaring tannins and bracing acid tension that lead to a firmly grippy finish.

This 100% estate-grown Cabernet Franc was aged for 18 months in 27% new French oak and 8% new Hungarian oak. The nose is strikingly attractive, with dark currant fruit, tobacco, sage, and dried spearmint. Supple yet firm tannins frame a juicy palate with excellent phenolic grip and savory intensity. A gorgeous dried tobacco note carries through, evoking the fragrant dried ranch grasses that scent the Livermore Valley air on a warm summer day. That same aromatic intensity is captured in the glass—and it’s so very pretty.

This 100% Cabernet Franc was aged for 18 months in 36% new French oak barrels. Polished, poised, and profoundly expressive, it layers perfectly ripe black currant, muddled plum, and black cherry with remarkable precision. Medium- to full-bodied, with firm yet velvety tannins framing savory black fruit laced with sweet dried herbs and spearmint. Cigar box nuances drive the bone-dry finish, while a lift of blood orange acidity brings clarity and focus. It stands out among the most complex Cabernet Francs of my tasting in May 2025 in the Livermore Valley.

100% Cabernet Franc, aged for 20 months in French oak, this red leads with a bold nose of macerated cherries, black currants, and wet river stone aromatics. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, with supple, chocolatey tannins that are both rich and inviting. Layers of dark berry fruit follow, along with savory wild herb nuances and a spicy finish. Balanced, complex, and thoroughly appealing.
