“Stella Solitaria,” meaning “Lone Star” in Italian, is a blend of 45% Montepulciano and 45% Aglianico (both sourced from Wildseed Farms Vineyard in the Hill Country AVA near Fredericksburg), and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (from Family Vineyard near Brownfield in Terry County). Fermented in open-top small-lot bins, the wine is pressed to tank, cold-settled, and then aged for up to 48 months in mostly neutral oak. The result is an elegant, vibrant red wine with crunchy red fruit flavors, powerful tannins, and notes of mocha. Blood orange acidity and a rich vein of chalky minerality on the finish add balance and complexity to this bright, spicy, and zippy red blend.

(Barrel Sample) Incredibly polished with power, energy, and tension, this blend of 70% Monteuplicano, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Sangiovese offers gorgeously pure red fruits laced with vanilla and tobacco spice notes. Medium-bodied with polished tannins that are already poised for foundational success, it shows great promise. This is going to be a killer wine when it’s finally released, and I can’t wait to re-taste it. There’s been a dynamic shift—a watershed moment—in the production of these wines since Napa-based consultant Jean Hoefliger began consulting with Uplift Vineyard in 2022. The transformation is evident, and this wine is a testament to that evolution, promising an exciting future for these wines.

Sourced from both hillside blocks and rows along the road leading to the winery, this six-barrel selection was hand-picked, destemmed, and fermented in open tops with punchdowns and pumpovers. Aged for around 15 months, it’s slightly riper and more concentrated than the 2021, it offers mulberry fruit, brown spice, and a medium-bodied richness. The tannins are plumper yet still grippy, with just enough tension to support the juicy core.

This 2022 Monroy Wines Cabernet Sauvignon hails from Kick Ranch, a 40-acre vineyard on the western slope of Spring Mountain in the Mayacamas Mountains, within the Fountaingrove District of Sonoma, where vines grow in iron-rich soils—and that mineral quality remains evident, even with the riper fruit character brought on by the warmer vintage. The oak is a bit more pronounced in 2022, yet the palate is utterly charming, leaning into dark fruit tones of black raspberry, balsamic strawberry, dark chocolate, and cherry. It’s more fruit-driven and less earthy than the 2021, but equally joyful to drink, with fine, powdery tannins that build a bit with some grip but land softly through a graceful finish. A very nice wine from the challenging 2022 vintage from Adolfo Hernandez who explained his background and winemaking style to me as follows: “I was the enologist and then assistant winemaker at Eisele Vineyard, splitting my time—two years each—between the Araujos and Château Latour. From there, I spent a year with Martha McClellan at Checkerboard, where we also made her gorgeous Levy & McClellan wines. In 2017, I started as associate winemaker at Benovia in the Russian River Valley with Mike Sullivan, where I’m happily still working today. I now make Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for Benovia while also producing wines under my own Monroy label. I focus on crafting cooler-climate style Cabernet Sauvignon that emphasizes floral and savory notes. All fermentations are done in barrel via closed-head rolling macerations, which I cooper myself. Barrel fermentation gives richness and density to the wines without the need to blend or harvest riper, more bombastic components, and naturally keeps the alcohol levels at or below 14%. I use only French oak, typically around 40% new.”

A beautifully spicy, structured, earthy expression of a distinct place and time. Deftly balancing savory, dark cherry flavors with pepper and bramble notes, with a palate that is equal parts depth and nuance. This one should stand the test of time. – J.R.

This Malbec is savory and muscular, with notes of black cherry, black truffle, and charcuterie layered with pressed wildflowers, dried thyme, and black olive. Medium- to full-bodied, the palate mirrors the aromatics, framed by velvety, fine-grained tannins. Crushed stone minerality anchors the finish, along with a touch of clove and smoky, loamy earth. Aged up to 28 months in 65% new French oak.

Fragrant red berry fruit is tinged with bay laurel, spearmint, thyme, and cherry pit. Medium-bodied on the palate, with blood orange acidity and elegant cedarwood notes, complemented by dried fennel, espresso, and a kiss of red licorice. After a short cold soak, the wine was whole-berry fermented with native yeasts, received two punchdowns, then was pressed to tank, settled, and racked to barrel to complete fermentation. Malolactic fermentation followed, and the wine was aged for up to 22 months in 25–35% new French oak. Blending occurred halfway through the aging process.

Leads with paprika, dried thyme, rosemary, and a touch of dried dill, all building into a medium-bodied wine with rich texture and superfine tannins—firm, muscular, yet well integrated. It shows admirable restraint, with balanced acidity and intense red berry fruit driving a long, juicy finish.

The GPS red blend gets its name from a double meaning—both a nod to place and a California spin on traditional Rhône blends (with Grenache and Syrah joined by Petite Sirah to form Page Mill’s flagship red). The youthful nose of this 2022 vintage brims with raspberry, cinnamon, violets, plums, and pepper, while the palate delivers flavors of black raspberry and black cherry. Powerful yet smooth, the wine is beautifully balanced by a vibrant, energetic lift that keeps it fresh and compelling. -JR

A refined and elegant red, this Grenache is floral, fresh, and almost delicate, with lifted aromas of red berries. The mouthfeel is absolutely lovely—herbal, spicy, and layered with vibrant red plum fruit. A sense of energy and poise carries through to the long, graceful finish, well-balanced and expressive. -JR

A ripe-fruited Pinot Noir showing bold charred oak notes, hints of underbrush, and high-toned acidity. The palate is supple and juicy, with dark berry fruit and spice on a medium- to full-bodied frame. This 100% Pinot Noir is made from Certified Organic grapes (115 and Calera clones) farmed biodynamically, fermented with natural yeasts, and aged for 17 months in 20% new French oak before being bottled unfiltered. Panther Ridge Vineyard sits on a seven-acre ridge on the western slope of Sonoma Mountain in the Petaluma Gap. Most of their fruit is sold to boutique wineries, with a small quantity of wine made under their own Panther Ridge label in collaboration with winemaker Adrian Manspeaker (of Joseph Jewell Wines).

From the Leras Family Vineyard, where vines have been rooted since the 1980s, this Pinot Noir is a blend of Pommard, Beringer Heritage, 115, 667, and 777 clones, aged for 11 months in 50% new French oak. It’s a ripe, expressive wine, showing cherry compote, espresso, and toffee nuances alongside a touch of bay leaf. Tart acidity and firm tannins frame the palate, with a slightly drying finish that makes it a perfect match for food—spicy braised pork tacos would be ideal. It’s thoroughly enjoyable to drink and begs to be paired with a long, indulgent meal. This single-clone Pinot Noir comes from the Leras, Bucher, and Peters vineyards in the Russian River Valley and was aged for 11 months in 80% new French oak. Light ruby with orange hues in the glass, it offers fragrant aromas of red cherry, Earl Grey tea, and a spicy, woody note that carries through on the medium-bodied palate. Tart cherry fruit, incense, and earth define the finish. It’s a beautifully structured wine that could almost be mistaken for a young Burgundy from Chambertin—*almost*—but its vibrant California character shines through. Papapietro’s Zinfandel is sourced from two well-established vineyards in the heart of Dry Creek Valley—Pauline’s Vineyard and Tiber Crest Farms—and aged for 15 months in two- and three-year-old French oak barrels. It bursts with blue-fruited fireworks, cola notes, and a hint of underbrush and sage, building on the medium-bodied palate with zesty blood orange acidity. The finish is long and lingering, echoing with more cola and spice. Just four barrels were produced of this Donnachadh Vineyard Syrah from Alban and Estrella clones, aged 10 months in French oak. The nose is deeply enticing—rich with spicy charcuterie, violets, and black cherry fruit. On the medium-bodied palate, firm, mineral-laced tannins and zesty saline acidity deliver mouthwatering tension. Layers of blackberry coulis, cherry pit, vanilla, and ironstone minerality unfurl across a long, tightly coiled finish. Still youthful and structured, this wine promises a decade or more of compelling evolution.

You could almost guess Gap’s Crown just by looking at it—the deep ruby hue with regal crimson tones gives it away. Wines from this site tend to show that noble color, and this medium- to full-bodied Pinot Noir follows suit with deeply concentrated mulberry and cherry fruit, creamy soft texture, and bold aromatics of Asian spice. Subtle notes of dried fig and elegant cedarwood frame the finish. Aged in 46% new French oak with the remainder in neutral barrels, it’s a powerful yet supple Pinot Noir—richly flavored, beautifully balanced, and one 2022 Gap’s Crown bottling you’ll definitely want to stockpile. It’s pure California Pinot at its best, showcasing perfectly ripe cherry and raspberry fruit accented by smoky cherrywood and clove. The tannins are soft, round, and supple, balanced by tangy blood orange acidity, and the finish lingers gracefully with notes of dusty rose and warm brown spice that’s utterly enticing.
