In a stunning move, California voters have officially recalled the 2020 wine harvest. The snap election, initiated by California Wine Drinkers Anonymous (CWDA), passed last week after what officials called “a rounding error, or maybe a technical glitch—we’re not totally sure.”
“All grapes from 2020 still on the vine, and any wines made from 2020 grapes, must be pulled from shelves immediately,” declared a CWDA chairperson, adding that “voters deserve better fruit, ideally from a vintage that didn’t taste like winemaker despair.”
Napa Valley Vintners, the trade group representing hundreds of wineries in Napa Valley, praised the decision. “Honestly, it’s a relief,” said an NVV representative who asked not to be named for fear Napa residents might look up their salary. “Our members have been trying to forget 2020 anyway, but companies like Wine Spies and Vivino just keep it on life support.”
When reached by phone, Decanter’s Napa Valley Correspondent, Jonathan Cristaldi, who rated the 2020 vintage 3.5 out of 5 stars and gave some 99-pointers, declined to comment.
Replacement wines will be chosen in the next harvest vote.
