Serve it well-chilled alongside a pork loin with an aromatic spice rub.

The finish is smoky, with lingering clove and licorice notes that provide depth and complexity. This is one of the most intricate and intriguing wines from Rhinory that I’ve tasted.

This bright and zippy Sauvignon Blanc from Del Valley Vineyard, located about 70 miles from El Paso on a site of ancient river rock, is fresh and precise. Medium-bodied, it presents apple skin tannins, white pepper notes, and crunchy red fruit, all scented with fresh rose petals and violets that carry through the wine from start to finish. I first tasted this wine in November of 2024, and since then, it’s put on some real weight, depth of fruit flavor, and the finish is long with saline-minerality that is incredibly inviting. A year ago, I wrote that this 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon shows the most promise among all of the barrel samples I tasted in Texas in November 2024. Tasting it again in October of 2025, this wine is just as impressive, gaining fruit depth and density, boasting a kind of Left Bank purity in the fruit profile, showcasing vibrant red and black fruit, spices, and mineral nuances, along with notes of thyme, sage, and anise with wet slate minerality on the lengthy finish. Medium- to full-bodied, it offers crisp, crunchy acidity and firm, inviting tannins. Pristine red fruit and elegant cedarwood spice character build on the medium-bodied palate, with impressive, fine, and stacked tannins that lay a solid foundation for this youthful Montepulciano red. I first tasted this wine as a barrel sample, and over a year, it’s put on some wonderful weight, and the fruit profile has grown with darkness, power, and depth. The winery is situated on a stunning 72-acre site, with 55 acres planted as of 2024, in Hoover’s Valley within the Llano Uplift, surrounded by three mountain ranges and the Colorado River. This particular variety does really well here in Texas because it can take heat, it can take late spring freezes, it can take rain and drought, and still comes out on top. Medium-bodied, it builds richness on the palate with assertive, very fine, and balanced tannins that provide structure and depth. There’s been a dynamic shift—a watershed moment—in the production of these wines since Napa-based consultant Jean Hoefliger began consulting with Uplift Vineyard in 2022. The transformation is evident, and this wine is a testament to that evolution, promising an exciting future for these wines.

From the Hye Estate, this Tannat is ripe and fragrant, with a beautiful mix of red and purple florals, sweet spices, and extremely polished, firm, fine-grained tannins. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, it showcases brown spices and elegant cedarwood throughout, all while maintaining incredible freshness. Terrific fruit purity and density of fruit weight on the mid-palate are off the charts. Winemaker Tony Offill, who started here in 2017, has made marked improvements, and with Napa-based consultant Jean Hoefliger, who began consulting with William Chris in 2022, the transformation of these wines is incredible, and they are among the best wines being made in Texas today.

Wow, what a marvelously rich, full-bodied, and powerful Tannat, but with impressive energy and tension.  It boasts balanced, robust tannins and loads of perfectly ripe dark berry fruit, including blueberry compote, alongside sweet and savory spices, and pure, natural, balanced acidity that keeps this wine grippy, fresh, and bright. The tannisn are massive and powerful, and I’d hold onto this until 2027, until popping corks.  Consumers are in for a real treat when this is offered through the tasting room outside of Fredericksburg. A captivating expression of Tannat that promises to impress. The La Valentía 100% Grenache, sourced from Bounty Harvest Vineyard in Gaines County, sits just outside the Texas High Plains AVA but benefits from its high-altitude terroir at 3,500 feet. Grown in sandy loam and caliche (limestone) soils, the wine undergoes a 5-day cold soak in stainless steel with gentle pumpovers before aging for 12 months in neutral French oak with bâtonnage. This Grenache shows ripe, pure red berry fruit complemented by brown baking spice notes. Medium-bodied, it is framed by firm, grippy tannins with a chocolaty edge, leading to a finish highlighted by blood orange acidity and a distinctively salty, crushed granite minerality.

The Fire Oak Vineyard, located in Mills County just north of the Texas Hill Country border, produces this blend of 55% Carignan and 45% Mourvèdre, which is brimming with bright red-toned fruits and a savory baking spice character. Medium-bodied, the wine offers mocha-rich, fine-grained tannins that provide structure, with candied red berry fruit carrying through to a rich, satisfying finish. A well-rounded and flavorful expression of these two varieties.

The 2024 Ducks Unlimited Red Blend is simply fantastic. It’s a powerhouse, and one of the best red wines I’ve tasted from Texas. The aromatics just soar out of the glass with blackberry and boysenberry fruit framed by elegant cedarwood spice, lifted by violets and a bright pop of blue fruit. Medium to full-bodied, it shows a framework of fine-grained, firm tannins with a long finish marked by wet slate and crushed rock minerality, underscored by crisp, focused acidity. Serve it cool, at a cellar temperature of about 57°F, and you’d be crazy not to pair it with brisket or seared duck breast over a balsamic reduction. The blend is 62% Tannat from Vintage Press Vineyard and Hye Estate, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot from Dell Valley Vineyard.

This sparkling is made entirely from the Blanc du Bois grape, sourced from Mound Prairie Vineyards outside of College Station Texas. Elisa Christopher Wines is owned by husband-and-wife duo Elisa and Chris, with Elisa also serving as the winemaker. Passionate about sparkling wine and their red wine program, they plan to begin planting their 43-acre estate in 2026.

This Tannat from Narra Vineyards in the Texas High Plains is incredibly savory, with bright herbaceous notes leaping out of the glass, reminiscent of jalapeño, dried sage, smoky thyme, and rosemary. On the medium-bodied palate, red currants abound, while the tannins are firm and tense, providing structure and depth. Give it some air to allow those tannins to soften a bit.

The Pedernales 2021 Tempranillo Reserve opens with dusty currant fruit and rich leather spices, accompanied by subtle loamy earth aromas. Full-bodied on entry, it is framed by very firm, structured tannins that provide a solid foundation for layers of red-toned fruits to emerge, along with fashionable sweet spice notes. The wine glides to a long, complex finish marked by prairie grass, clove, and extra dark cacao, showcasing both depth and sophistication.

The GSM Mélange 2021 from Pedernales Cellars blends 40% Mourvèdre, 33% Grenache, and 27% Syrah. It offers crunchy red-toned fruit notes, interalced with black currants, while hints of black truffle add aromatic complexity. Medium-bodied with silky, black tea-infsued tannins, black truffle and underbrush hints on the palate fuel a lengthy and mienral-rich finish.

The Portree Cellars Tannat from the Lahey Vineyard in the Texas High Plains offers a sappy, red-toned fruit character in a medium-bodied, grippy expression of Tannat. Unlike many of the richer, denser Tannats seen throughout Texas, this one leans slightly lighter and greener, with distinctive tobacco, black tea, and truffle notes on the dry finish. While it may not have the power and density of other Tannats, its freshness and unique profile make it a delightful choice. Serve it with a good chill alongside your favorite Texas BBQ.

The Parr Vineyard Mourvèdre from the Texas Hill Country, produced and bottled by Kerrville Hills Winery, is a meaty, intense, and deeply flavorful wine. Its medium-bodied palate is framed by muscular, firm tannins, complemented by savory charcuterie and white pepper notes. A hint of vanilla bean and chocolate adds richness, leading to a lengthy and powerful finish.

When John Rivenburgh worked for Bending Branch, he pioneered the planting of Vermentino in Texas, establishing it in the High Plains around 2009. This 100% Vermentino is sourced from Canted County Vineyards, co-owned by the Morland and Holiday families. With approximately 1,000 acres under vine, this site has become a vital operation in the Texas wine scene. John champions Vermentino for its resilience in Texas’s climate, its suitability for machine harvesting—essential in the region—and its similarity to Sicilian whites, a personal favorite of his. Crafted similarly to his Picpoul Blanc, the grapes are pressed at the winery in Kerrville, fermented, and aged in neutral vessels for about six months before bottling. This Vermentino is lean, focused, and brimming with high acidity—a real “acid trip.” It delivers a bright squeeze of lemon-lime and lime zest, accented by white flowers, acacia, a hint of Marcona almonds, and Texas purple sage. The zippy, zingy acidity forms a solid foundation for the citrus-driven palate, leading to a long, mineral-driven finish with cool, wet granite character. All too easy to drink.
This release of Robert Clay’s Chardonnay, sourced from Mason County in the Texas Hill Country AVA, is sourced from vines rooted in the deep, fine Hickory sands that sit atop the expansive Hickory Aquifer. Barrel-aged for 12 months in neutral oak, this wine showcases a ripe, full-throttle character. It opens with vibrant citrus fruit, white pepper, and a subtle hint of savory prairie grass, intertwined with sweet cedarwood spices. Medium-bodied, the palate is surprisingly leaner than the nose suggests, offering bright acidity and balanced tension. A crowd-pleaser with excellent structure, it’s one of the most food-friendly Chardonnays from Texas. Notably, this “B 21 02 RCV CHA” is an unfiltered expression of Chardonnay (their “B 21 03 RCV CHA” offers a filtered version).
Barrel-aged for 12 months in neutral oak, this Robert Clay Chardonnay is sourced from Mason County in the Texas Hill Country, an hour west of Stonewall. Here, vines thrive in hickory sands—deep, fine soils that rest above the large Hickory Aquifer. This “B 21 03 RCV CHA” label represents the filtered expression of their Chardonnay, offering a leaner, more focused profile compared to their unfiltered “B 21 02 RCV CHA.” It showcases white pepper-infused citrus and orchard fruit, accented by savory cedarwood spices. Medium-bodied with precise acidity and heightened tension, this wine finishes with a distinctive cool, wet granite minerality.
The 2021 Ruby Cab, denoted as ‘B 21 00 RCV RUB’ on the label, was fermented with native yeast, no sulfites added. The pH clocks in at 4.1—intentionally high to shy away from the pyrazines typical of Cabernet. What you get on the nose is unmistakably Ruby Cabernet (look it up): a crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan grown in Texas. Aged for just 12 months in neutral barrel, this wine is meant to show customers what the grape expresses without oak influence. It smells of capsicum and bell pepper, with intense, grippy tannins and solid concentration. The grip here comes from tannin, not acidity, and it’s best paired with a well-salted steak. “This is an example young wine—only 13 months in neutral oak—used to show customers why we do extended barrel aging. Compare it to the 2017 Ruby Cab, which spent 52 months in barrel,” says Dan McLaughlin.

Aged in 40% new French oak and 60% neutral oak, this is a bold, muscular, and expressive Tempranillo from the estate. It offers dark berry fruit layered with red-fruit nuances, leather, tobacco, cocoa powder, and dried sage. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, it features fine-grained, maple-laced tannins and a bold, chocolaty finish accented by wet slate minerality. Nice freshness and verve.

The Spicewood Vineyards Red Wine Blend “Tandem” (a 50/50 blend of Carignan and Mourvèdre) is a fragrant wine that opens with delicate rose petal and violet notes, complemented by candied orange peel and red currant fruits. Medium-bodied, it features sappy tannins and layered flavors of agave nectar, toffee, and caramel, with subtle hints of dill.

Sourced from Dutton Vineyards in the Texas High Plains, this well-built, polished Tempranillo from Spicewood presents sweet red-toned fruit and subtle spice character. Medium-bodied on the palate, salty mineral notes add complexity, leading to a toasty cedarwood finish. Balanced and refined, this wine offers a harmonious blend of fruit, spice, and structure.

This 100% Souzao, a Portuguese variety known for its tiny berries and small clusters (especially in challenging vintages), was aged for 24 months in neutral American oak. Traditionally used in Port production on the Iberian Peninsula, Souzao shines here as a full-bodied, expressive dry wine. The profile is alluring, with black-fruited depth, rich woodsy and underbrush notes, savory hints of charcuterie, and pressed flowers. The palate is bold, featuring muscular, meaty tannins with firm grip and impressive mid-palate density, framed by a salty and chalky minerality that adds precision and length. Perfectly suited for hearty BBQ, smoked meats, or bacon-centric dishes, this wine is a powerhouse.

This blend of 41% Syrah, 36% Mourvèdre, 23% Grenache from Texas Wine Collective is a ripe, energetic and layered GSM style red, with nice red-toned fruit character and a medium-bodied palate expression. Complementing the fruit profile are white pepper and pressed violet nuances. Muscular, firm, and broad-shouldred tannins frame the palate, while a firm spine of acidity keeps this wine bright and fresh. Its long finsh is marked by the subtlest hints of charcuterie.

Texas Wine Collective’s Mourvèdre is a medium-bodied, solid red that offers elegant red berry fruit character, including red currants and dried strawberries, with subtle hints of clove and allspice. Incredibly accessible and straightforward, it boasts a fine-grained tannic intensity that is well-integrated. The wine finishes with a lengthy, mineral-rich finish, showcasing its depth and balance.

The 2021 Axis Reserve Tempranillo presents bold flavors of black olive, cherry pit, and tanned leather. Medium-bodied, it is framed by robust, assertive, and firm tannins along with crunchy acidity.
