Fermented and aged in stainless steel, concrete egg and neutral French oak, this wine was aged sur lees and did not undergo malolactic fermentation. As such, it is super bright and zesty, though you’d be hard-pressed to guess there’s no malo, as it shows real richness and depth — perhaps thanks to the Old Wente clones. Citrus fruit, white flowers, beeswax and vanilla unfold with great length and lovely wet-stone mineral tension. Really lovely.
Clone 777 from Fort Ross–Seaview, with just five barrels produced — about 125 cases. Aged 22 months in 40% new French oak. The wine shows red cherry and strawberry fruit with leather and tobacco notes, touches of caramel, and a good stony mineral intensity accented by a hint of salinity. Grapefruit zest and tangerine peel bring lift, while darker tones of mulberry, fig paste, and cherry cola deepen the mid-palate. Cocoa-powder tannins frame the finish. For all the fruit sweetness, this is a Cabernet-lover’s Merlot with balanced tension.
