Fewer than 125 cases produced, this meticulously crafted wine reflects an uncompromising pursuit of quality. Each barrel from each lot is tasted blind—multiple times—before being selected for inclusion in the final assemblage. The 2021 blend is composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon (Home Ranch Vineyard), 12% Merlot (Zayante Vineyard), and 3% Cabernet Franc (Ghielmetti Vineyard), all aged for 22 months in 100% French oak, 50% of which was new. The Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 7 component was fermented in stainless steel, while the Merlot and Cabernet Franc underwent fermentation in 1.7-ton open-top fermenters—each vinified separately to preserve character and precision. Long considered one of Livermore Valley’s benchmark reds, Lineage continues to deliver on its reputation. The 2021 vintage offers a complex and layered nose of dried herbs, graphite, dark minerality, black licorice, and brooding black cherry and cassis. On the palate, deep, silky blackcurrant fruit is laced with cocoa and savory undertones, supported by a firm core of acidity and polished tannins. This is a wine of tension, balance, and elegance—with the structural integrity to age for decades. Fruit is entirely from the Lancaster Estate, fermented with native yeast in tank and aged 24 months in 100% new French oak. The wine is intensely fruit-driven, with raspberry and strawberry notes alongside warming baking spices, clove, plum skin, grapefruit zest, lavender, and rose stem. It’s super juicy on the palate with very soft, plump tannins and a cool wet-river-stone minerality. This is a porch-pounder of a wine in this vintage—which, at $130, is a good thing if you collect it. Let your more structured, “serious” vintages continue to age while you enjoy the heck out of this one.

A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec, 6% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in 75% new French oak. Fruit is sourced from iconic sites including Vadasz in Sonoma Valley, Cherryblock, vineyards in Knights Valley and Alexander Valley, Lancaster, LookOut, Magnolia Ranch, the Chateau St. Jean Estate, and portions of Rancho Salina. The Foley family’s goal has been to restore this winery’s reputation, and with winemaker Mari Wells Coyle, it’s clearly on that path. I tasted the 2022 vintage and scored it 96 points—a remarkable wine from a challenging year. Here in 2023, a cooler and more forgiving growing season has produced another beautifully polished expression. The aromatics are classic Sonoma: bright, fresh red-cherry and forest-berry character, accented by fragrant sagebrush and white pepper. The wine is beautifully crafted and medium-bodied, with loads of energy. The tannins are refined and elegant, and the flavors are bright, lifted, and graceful. Such a delicious, high-toned, expressive wine.
