Bacigalupi Vineyards Pinot Noir

Two blocks at Bacigalupi’s Frost Ranch comprise this 2023 Pinot Noir: the Wente selection, picked two weeks later than in 2022, and the Pommard block, picked in October. The wine aged ten months in French oak barrels (33% new). It’s dark-fruited, with the ripe cherry appeal so prevalent in wines from this stretch of the Russian River Valley, brightened by orange peel and grapefruit zest. Cola nut fills in the gaps, joined by the creamy richness of the fruit and muscular tannins that form a solid foundation for this delectable wine. Vaughn Duffy is a small, family-owned winery based in Sonoma County producing about 3,000 cases annually and specializing in Pinot Noir. The wines are crafted by forklift-wiz-turned-winemaker Matt Duffy, who co-founded the winery in 2009 with his wife, Sara Vaughn.

This 100% Chardonnay from Durell Vineyard—crafted from Wente and Hyde clones—was aged for 14 months in 100% French oak, 21% new. Just 665 cases were produced. Crisp acidity and bright apple-skin tannins bring lift and precision, resulting in a beautifully harmonious and striking white wine from this exceptional vineyard. Supercharged and nicely concentrated, this is a powerhouse Chardonnay with loads of crushable appeal. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s not shy on oak, yet it comes across soft and generous, offering slightly toasty, buttered croissant flavors layered with lemon cream and hints of ginger spice. Full and expansive, with racy acidity and plenty of charred pineapple to make it feel festive. It’s a fun, energetic wine with remarkable depth of flavor balanced by a brightness that’s hard to describe—you simply have to grab a bottle and see for yourself. First planted in 1973 to Old Wente clone Chardonnay, Whitney’s Vineyard sits at 1,000 feet of elevation on a gravelly, gently sloping, southwest-facing hillside. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (45% new). No sulfites were added at harvest or during aging. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Founded in 1973 by Fred and Juelle Fisher, this second-generation family winery sources from estate vineyards in Sonoma County and Napa Valley.

Sourced from Lone Oak (65%) and Flora Marie (35%) vineyards, this Chardonnay is composed of 65% Old Wente and 35% Montrachet clones, fermented with native yeast. The wine was aged 11 months in 37% new French oak and one stainless-steel barrel. A silky entry gives way to a deeply expressive palate featuring black plums, black cherries, and a continuation of the tobacco note, all supported by a fine line of minerality. This Cabernet Franc from Wente Vineyards was fermented in stainless steel tanks with pneumatage twice daily, then aged for 19 months in 60% new French oak and 40% used French oak barrels. The nose is irresistible—bursting with iron-scented minerality and a hint of charcuterie that frames juicy currant fruit. On entry, notes of crushed cocoa nibs unfold, supported by firm, sturdy tannins that build in intensity through the long, spicy, and complex finish. It beautifully showcases the noble, dark currant fruit and zesty acid freshness that Cabernet Franc can achieve in the Livermore Valley. A tremendous value.

A blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc, with each variety fermented separately in small stainless steel tanks with pumpovers performed three times daily. The lots were aged individually for six months, then blended and aged for an additional eight months—spending time in 75% new French oak and 25% second- and third-use barrels. The nose is rich and layered, with dark fruits like cassis, black cherry, and black plum mingling with black licorice, savory black olive, and warm baking spices. Full-bodied with a super-smooth entry, the wine offers a robust, spicy mouthfeel that warms the palate while firm, well-integrated tannins promise excellent aging potential. 672 cases were produced. -JR

Wente’s 2023 Limited Release 100% Sauvignon Blanc comes from the Mel Vineyard, and is aged sur lie for six months in 10% new and 90% neutral French oak barrels. Just 21 barrels were produced of this electric and gratifying Sauvignon Blanc. Bright, clean citrus and orchard fruit leap from the glass, layered with subtle baking spice notes from extended lees contact. That character builds with spicy intensity on the medium-bodied palate, and the finish shows excellent focus and acid stamina—enough to carry a meal from aperitif hour through to dessert.

Nicki's Rosé

Made from 100% estate-grown Pinot Noir in Arroyo Seco, this rosé underwent primary fermentation in stainless steel and did not go through malolactic fermentation. It was aged for two months in stainless steel to preserve vibrancy. Floral, perky, and fresh, this is a perfect springtime sipper. Aromas of passionfruit, mango skin, and wild strawberry lead into a medium-bodied palate featuring bright red berry flavors and a subtle hint of watermelon on the finish. -JR

Fermented in a combination of stainless-steel tanks and French oak barrels, this wine was aged sur lie for six months with regular stirring. The remaining portion was aged in neutral oak and stainless steel to preserve freshness. Sourced from Montpellier cuttings, it opens with inviting aromas of vanilla, yellow apple, biscuit, lemon drop, and jasmine.
